I originally found this lesson on Pinterest through  https://www.flickr.com/photos/22303677@N06/5760279901/in/photostream website. You can pretty much do this project with any grade level. We used acrylic on bristol board and used projectors to blow up images taken of each student.

Colour Theory Portrait Painting

Colour Theory Portrait Painting

I had found a Bob Marley image that was cut into sections such like the student images you see here. The main focus was to paint each section using a colour school of their choice. And it was especially important to make sure they mixed their own original colours instead of only using the colours from the containers. Another requirement was to also find an image that has different amounts of shaded sections in it for more contrast. It was also important that when the students were dividing their sections that each section have apart of the portrait in them and not just a solid area as each section needs to represent a colour school. For the colour schemes I handed out a work sheet where they filled in the colours of their choice and circled the ones they wanted to implement into their painting. They were required to have at least 6 to 12 colour schemes.
I'm really proud of what my students for what they have accomplished. I will be happy to do this project again next year.
